It seems that the movie gods have granted us all a wish that we probably didn’t know that we wanted at first and definitely didn’t think that we’d be getting, In what could be considered a Black Twitter dream come true, a famous Tumblr caption turned miracle tweet is now in the works to be a legit buddy movie co-starring none other than Rihanna Fenty and Lupita Nyong’o!

To be directed by SelmaQueen Sugar and The 13th‘s frontwoman, Ava DuVernay, the film, originally posted by Elizabitchtaylor of Tumblr, was dreamed to be a “heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker,” first appearing July 5, 2014. Resurfacing a little while ago on Twitter, the idea quickly spread through the interwebs, gaining the attention of Ms. Nyong’o, Fenty, DuVernay and Insecure‘s Issa Rae, currently in talks to write the screenplay. Being slightly changed to Rihanna looking as if “she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scams,” it has been confirmed that this Internet dream will be coming to screens via Netflix.

In the words of the great James Baldwin, “Be careful what you set your heart upon – for it will surely be yours.” Coming from some of the humblest beginnings, this is a win for Twitter and working dreamers, writers, filmmakers, and creatives alike. We here at FTS are ridiculously excited for the coming duo and their phenomenal scams and thought that we’d share with you some of what we know is coming. Without further ado, here are three things to surely expect from the upcoming Rihpita movie.

1. Insanely good costume design.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you probably already know that both Rihanna and Lupita are currently some of fashion’s biggest It girls and essentially created color theory (I mean they look good in literally everything). With these two names attached to what could be one of the internet’s most sought after and awaited projects, you can only imagine the stylists, costume designers, and fashion illustrators (Hayden Williams, fingers crossed) that will be begging to clothe and design for them. When the entire rainbow is at their disposal for the most perfect and elegant scamming attire, Rihanna and Lupita are sure to be dressed DOWN.

2. Beautifully lit Black people in top notch editorial-worthy stills.

For people of color, good lighting while filming is a MUST. Often overlooked in many regards for the creations that hit the silver screen, for director Ava DuVernay, this is one thing, as a viewing audience, we don’t have to be concerned about. With Selma and episodes of Queen Sugar alone being perfect examples on shooting folks of darker complexions both vibrantly and carefully, nearly any freeze frame of DuVernay’s work could easily be considered a masterclass in nuanced cinematography. A bit of a lens cap aesthetic whore myself, I am willing to bet dollars (or tubs of Talenti) that this buddy movie will be surely be a visual masterpiece.

And last but certainly not least, 3.) A live-tweeted viewing party.

Call it however you’d like to, but if you want something done, Black Twitter is the force to make it happen. The proof is clearly in the pudding, or now, the writers’ room. We collectively function as some of the best cheerleaders, support groups, detective agencies, and boss-ass networks on the planet. Though that’s clearly not an excuse to abuse that power or to hire folks outside of the space to conduct research for duplicating such results (I’m looking at you, BET), consider it an affirmation on putting things into the Universe (or Beyoncé’s Internet). It’s only a matter of time until those things come back to you in full force, and for the hundreds of thousands of wishing tweeting folks and creatives, we damn sure intend to celebrate that. Given the success of and the camaraderie shared during events like ABC’s The Wiz Live and the more recent New Edition biopic, we like to play as hard as we work. As such, it’s damn-near guaranteed that watch parties in living rooms across the globe will be waiting to use selected hashtags and emojis for the film’s premiere. We definitely know that we will. Who knows? Maybe we at FTS will host our own Rihpita watch party. Whatever happens, we know we are ridiculously excited to see what comes of this #BlackGirlMagic and can’t wait for the coming updates, casting calls, and further details in this most wonderfully executed scam.
